I just started a few months ago, I'm 5'7 and 210lbs btw and I'm learning to bellydance not only to loose weight and get into better shape but because I think it'd incredibly sexy.. The only problem I seem to be having is with mayas, I have big hips... and I mean big... and I'm not sure why but it just doesn't look right when I try to do them, I'm not sure if it's just me, either, but any help would be appreciated.. specially tips on how to maya if you have huge hips like me hehe

on thing i try to keep in mind doing these is keeping my weight back on my heels and my butt up under me.. It seems to help keep the move flatter if that makes sense.

i sortof got it... what helped me was a post i read on another tribe that said, and I paste here:

Great explanation!! I usually tell mine to keep your knees bent (just trying on the right hip) Bring the right hip up as in your trying to touch your ribs with the top of your hip, then puch it out to the side (while up), Drop it down but still keeping the hip out, and then bring it back into nuteral. The same on the other side. This method to me works best. Once I explain this they usually get it with practice. I usually make them walk across the room with it so they are traveling right away. If they mess up I tell them to stop, get it going again and then start walking again. I usually never have problems.

a person called "Nicole" posted this here: tribes.tribe.net/teachingb...ff246d84d2
and it seems to've helped a little

This is exactly the way my teacher taught me. It still takes practise to get it right and comfortable.

As far as choreography....take the steps youn know and listen to your music. You will be able create your own. Don't try to do anything complicated. As you learn more and practise more, you will be able to do more complicated movements. But complicated movements does not make a great dance. It is the feeling of the dancer and how she interprets the music to her audience as well as her skill.

You can also get great instructional videos that will teach you how to put steps together to create your own choreography.

Make sure that you're really isolating your hips. Keep your posture nice and straight and try to keep you chest completely out of the movement or it will get lost. It may look different, but it should still look fine as long as it's isolated. Got huuugge hips myself.
