Good Day everyone.
I hope that everyone had a lovely holiday filled with great memories. I have been asked recently by a couple of people to write an article on creating a dance space to practice with in their home. It would be really wonderful if some of you could share the spaces you have created for yourselves.
I really appreciate the help.

Re: Need to create a dance space
Sun, December 28, 2008 - 5:57 PMI moved from a small one bed room apartment to a fairly large two bedroom house in March. I'm paying dearly for that extra space, but for me it's worth it. The formal dining room doubles as my dance studio (it large with great hardwood floors.) It's great to have plenty of elbow room for for my BD partner and I to rehearse in, and inspires me to work on my solo pieces as well. In order to avoid shattering the chandelier with our cane work, we've moved our sessions into the living room lately.
I have no idea what other information you need, but feel free to contact me if you'd like more details.

Re: Need to create a dance space
Sun, December 28, 2008 - 7:22 PMThanks for the input Tammy.
I really just wanted to be able and share ideas and help others see what could be possible in their space.
Thanks for responding the ideas will help, I had never thought of using my dining room it is actually perfect now that all our children are out of the house. Very few sit down meals at the table now.
Happy New Year,

Re: Need to create a dance space
Sun, December 28, 2008 - 7:42 PMIt helps that I don't have a formal dinning room set. I have a table, that I just move aside with the folding chairs. I bought several full length mirrors that I tuck away behind the doors when they aren't in use. Having an open space in the middle of your house is inspiring. I can't seen to work across the dining room floor without doing a little shimmy or something!
Happy New Year to you too!

Re: Need to create a dance space
Mon, December 29, 2008 - 5:44 PMWe made a dance studio for a friend by taking up the carpet in her family room and dining room. We then laid down composite flooring, added full length mirrors on two walls, and changed the lighting to ceiling lights (not chandeliers). Of course they owned the house, it was not a rental. She added velvet curtains to the doors for privacy. Plus a shelf above the mirrors for her contest awards and momentos.
Yes, we used to be General Contractors. LOL

Re: Need to create a dance space
Wed, December 31, 2008 - 8:05 AMI have two dance spaces in my house (it's a big old house & I live alone). One is the dining room, which is long & set up with furniture on either side but not the center; that makes for good space to travel, and things can be moved to create group practice space when we don't work at our studio.
The other is my real yoga/dance room. It's a converted trunk room (about 8'x10'), and I covered the hardwood with gym mat for cushion & so I don't need a yoga mat on the aged floor. It has mirrors for dance technique practice & is otherwise pretty much empty. I bring in my laptop when I want to work with videos.

Re: Need to create a dance space
Wed, February 11, 2009 - 6:54 AMIncluding a link to directions to make those big diy framed mylar mirrors would be helpful. I've often thought of trying them, but never have. -

Re: Need to create a dance space
Sun, March 1, 2009 - 5:52 PMI have heard the mylar mirrors look like funhouse mirrors. That was from someone in our area that had them. -

Re: Need to create a dance space
Sun, March 1, 2009 - 5:55 PMi went to the oregon version of Wal Mart.. Fred Meyers and got a mirror for 32 bux.. it fits in the space between a large piece of furniture and the corner of the room. Its full length.. Not perfect.. but it works very well.. and it doesn't look like a funhouse mirror.. though i kinda wish it did.. I could use that as an excuse lol

Re: Need to create a dance space
Sun, March 1, 2009 - 5:59 PMWe have them in my parks and rec class, they are perfect. I would never have known they weren't "real" until I saw a guy come yank them off the wall to carry into another room for ballet class- they were featherweight. I asked my teacher about them, she has some in her home studio too, but says hers do have a slight warp to them. I don't think they're quite funhouse though! I think there is some special technique for stretching the mylar involved. -
