We all know Kirstie Alley and Valerie Bertinelli used Jenny Craig and lost weight successfull and kept it off, but I just saw a TV commercial for Jenny with Queen Latifah and it turns out she is stepping up as Jenny's spokemodel: www.foxnews.com/story/0,29...909,00.html
I have look up to all three of these of these women for their different accomplishments, and applaud them for working to get healthy (versus 'skinny'). And as much as I don't want to follow the crowd, the support of Jenny Craig from these three women holds a lot of 'weight' for me!
I need to loose some weight, about 50 lbs (my doctor recently told me I should not weigh over 200lbs when I told her about some knee pain I have been having) and since I don't cook (or like to cook, that is). Beside dance, I have a pretty sedentary life since I am a computer programmer (in front of a computer at LEAST 8 hours a day) and I have trouble with snacking and portions since my blood sugar goes crazy so I over eat and then feel bad (physically) so I know not only do I need to up my exercise, but I need to get control over my eating and since I don't cook, I end up eating whatever the hubby makes and since he is a large man, he tends to give me portions that are too big (so I need to relearn portion control).
I have been looking at trying either the NutriSystem or Jenny plan but wonder just how hard it is and if they really work. I already have trouble maintaining my blood sugar (I am not diabetic) and wonder if I will be hungry if I try one of these plans (prepackaged food plan that is)
Anyone here try either of these plans? Any feedback??

Re: BBW Celebs / Jenny Craig Spokesmodels - do these plans really work?
Mon, February 18, 2008 - 8:36 PMI'm currently on an EDiets plan (www.ediets.com). They offer lots of different plans (there's one called the convenience/low-to-no cook plan) and options (including fast food, microwave meals, etc) and I feel like I'm eating more food volume-wise than I did before. They also have fitness plans, forums, a recipe bank and online help/mentoring. I like having the freedom to change my menu around (like "no thanks, I'll pass on the wheat-germ covered banana...") and I am admittedly anti-social so being able to handle my dieting at home with just my fiancee is comforting.
I originally got on Ediets a couple of years ago right before I ruptured a disk in my back and had to have surgery and I didn't stick with it long enough. I managed to lose about 30lbs in 2 1/2 months that go around. This time I have no choice...doctor's orders.
I'm a computer technician so I'm pretty much glued to my chair too. :)

Re: BBW Celebs / Jenny Craig Spokesmodels - do these plans really work?
Mon, February 18, 2008 - 8:37 PMokay i'll go for it.. It depends on what you mean by "work". Will you loose weight? Probably. Will you be able to keep it off.. Probably not. Personally i think people are better off learning to keep the proper kinds of food around.. healthy stuff.. fruits and vegies. Teach your husband to give you smaller servings and/or teach yourself that you don't have to clean your plate. Being healthy is a lifestyle. You have to learn the skills to eat a balanced diet and if Jennie is serving things up for you, its not likely you'll be learning the skills to maintain. I also prefer hearing the lines about being healthy rather than skinny. In my opinion, you have to learn the skills to eat healthy and take responsibility to do that. Diets don't work. Lifestyle changes do.

Re: BBW Celebs / Jenny Craig Spokesmodels - do these plans really work?
Tue, February 19, 2008 - 5:21 AMI was on Nutrisystem and a friend was on Jenny Craig at the same time. Did I lose weight, yup....did I keep it off, nope. I think that is a pretty typical story for the diets. What it did teach me, and I try to keep to even now, is portion sizes and how to make better choices. But I really believe that unless you have decided you are going to make changes that will become your way of life, nothing will work long term. You aren't hungry on the diets cause there is a lot of your own food you have to buy and prepare in addition to the prepackaged meals. So if you are going in thinking you only have to open one little box three times a day and you are done, that is not how the programs work. You have to add veggies and salads and breads etc to pretty much every meal.
If you need a kick start, either would work as well as maybe trying something from ediets. And as portion control is a thing for you, it might be helpful. I think though it is expensive over the long term and although maybe I was an odd one, I ended up having problems with some of the preservatives in the foods and after about 5 months found I couldn't stick with their pre-packaged food any longer.
I hope this info helps a bit and good luck with the route you choose. I would be happy to share more of my experiences if it might help. -

Re: BBW Celebs / Jenny Craig Spokesmodels - do these plans really work?
Tue, February 19, 2008 - 12:52 PMThanks for the feedback.
I figured that there was more than "open box, insert food into tummy" for Jenny; I have looked at the NutriSystem plan more than the Jenny plan, and once I found out all the extra stuff (veggies and such) you have to add, I figured I would end up going back to South Beach (which worked for me a couple years ago).
I may be sedentary all day, but my diet is not all that horrible so I am not sure why I have gotten so heavy plus I do dance 7 hours a week at least so I am getting some exercise. And I worry more about how my health will be affected by the excess weight (and my pants being tight is a bit of a problem too!) - but the fact that going on the South beach plan for a couple months allowed me to loose 20-25 lbs makes me think my diet definitely has something to do with my weight! -

Re: BBW Celebs / Jenny Craig Spokesmodels - do these plans really work?
Tue, February 19, 2008 - 1:21 PMI agree that while food plans may work in the short term you still haven't really learned how to control your own diet. Eventually you'll have to learn to prepare your own meals and control your own portions. Nothing worthwhile is easy and changing such ingrained patterns as what you eat is close to the hardest thing you can do but if you can, you've got it licked.
Good Fortune on changing your diet. Start small and slowly, give yourself permission to screw up and then start over. Get support from friends and family. Good food does taste better and helps you eat less so choose food you really enjoy. Let us know how it's going.

Re: BBW Celebs / Jenny Craig Spokesmodels - do these plans really work?
Tue, February 19, 2008 - 1:34 PMWell, portion control is a big one for me (always had been an issue - I frequently ate as much as my brothers but it was not an issue until my metabolism slowed down as I got older). I think WHAT I eat is actually pretty good; I don’t eat fast food (except when traveling, when I try to stick to 'healthy' fast food like salads from Subway, and I try to only do that if I have to!), otherwise we eat at home a lot, and hubby cooks for me a lot. And he makes me pretty much whatever I want, how I want it (lots of organic, low fat, lots of veggies, no mammals, etc)
Average week of meals (reposted from a blog entry when I was trying to eliminate poultry from my diet, that failed btw):
Breakfast
coffee with real half and half (fat free) and splenda (probably 6 cups from the coffee maker measurement - daily)
** try to avoid the sweets that get brought to work – sometimes I win, sometimes the sweets win!
A smoothie with organic yogurt – frozen strawberries, bananas and Simply Juice OJ (fresh, not concentrate)
Or bran/flake cereal with soy milk
Or bagel with cream cheese (typically just 1 day a week)
lunch:
Usually leftovers from the night before.
Or a big salad with shredded cheese and/or hard boiled eggs.
Or can of soup (switched to organic lately) with pita/fresh baked bread (bought at the deli)/Kashi TLC crackers
After lunch I drink only water. Not big on sodas at all. When I do get a drink with a meal, I prefer SOBE or FUZE drinks.
Dinner: (switched around from previous posting - this allows me to have curry for lunch all week - hooray!)
Monday is now Curry night – hubby makes a wet vegetable curry (used to be chicken curry) and serves over Jasmine rice, we recently added hummus and pita tot his meal
Tuesday night I teach and don’t get a real dinner – instead I usually end up eating a second lunch type meal before dance class
Wednesday is now usually fish night – some kind of pan cooked (not fried) fresh fish with couscous or rice and veggies (usually frz broccoli, sometime canned green beans)
Thursday is another dance night and I get home rather late so we enjoy ensalata (mozzarella cheese, tomatoes, cucumbers drizzled with olive oil and vinegar) usually served with bread or pita
Friday is madness – whatever is easy (pizza, soup, or going out to dinner) - I am still mindful of what I eat.

Re: BBW Celebs / Jenny Craig Spokesmodels - do these plans really work?
Wed, February 20, 2008 - 8:36 PMPlease accept my pre-apology for the rant that follows.......
I REALLY have an issue with the Jenny Craig, Nutri-System, etc. diets.
First of all, the food looks GROSS...I used to work with a girl who was on Jenny Craig...The food she ate looked and smelled disgusting...She opened a can of chili one time that looked like a small can of dog food and smelled like it too..I got that smell in my brain and that was all I could smell for days...I don't know about the Nutri-System or ediet thing but that TOTALLY turned me off of anything like that.
Second, and this is just an opinion having never personally been on one of the programs, what does the program actually teach you about eating, cooking, portion control, etc. when you reach your goal and don't need the program anymore? When I was in High School, my mom and I did the Weight Watchers thing, and personally I think if you are shooting for the "lifestyle change" program, that would be more of the way to go....And what about the cost? "Lose 20 pounds for $20 (plus the cost of food)"...WTF?...How do they figure that it should cost you $20 to lose 20 pounds...And that food is expensive!!!
How healthy is all of that prepackaged food anyway? Have you looked at the nutrional info on a Lean Cuisine or Weight Watchers Smart Ones box? That stuff is so full of salt (sodium) that you're better off just pouring the salt shaker down your gullet. I used to eat that stuff until my sister, who is a health and fitness FREAK, told me that the amount of salt in JUST ONE Lean Cuisine Pannini is more than you're supposed to have in your diet in an ENTIRE WEEK.
Like it has been mentioned before, it is about changing your lifestyle...Little changes add up over time...LEARN TO COOK...When you shop for food, stick to the outside perimeter of the store, that is where all of the good for you stuff is...If you go down the aisles, that is where all of the stuff that is not good for you is....This really is true if you take the time to think about the way most grocery stores are set up...If you must eat fast food (PMS, stress, time crunch, just don't give a shit day, etc.) get fruit instead of fries, don't super size, get a diet soda, water or unsweetened iced tea...Switch to low fat or no fat in the lattes, etc....Don't drive around in the Wal-Mart parking lot looking for the closest parking place...Park and walk if you are physically able...If you slip up, make up for it at the next meal or just the next day...Don't deprive yourself...If you want a piece of cake, eat a damn piece of cake...Just don't eat a piece the size of your kid's face...The list goes on.
And my husband says "If everyone went on Jenny Craig then there would be no Big Beautiful Bellydancers Tribe and you all would have to switch to the Skinny Bitch TrIbe!"...Gotta love that man of mine!!!

Thu, February 21, 2008 - 9:50 AMIt's really too bad that Queen Latifah joined them now.. I think she is a beautiful and sucessful woman no matter her size. It sends young girls the wrong message. -

Re: BBW Celebs / Jenny Craig Spokesmodels - do these plans really work?
Thu, February 21, 2008 - 10:58 AMI agree about it being too bad that Queen Latifah has been turned to the dark side. My only hope is that she does keep advertising that she is "getting healthy" not "getting skinny". -

Re: BBW Celebs / Jenny Craig Spokesmodels - do these plans really work?
Fri, February 22, 2008 - 7:18 AMI have been on so many diets it's not funny! I did Nutrisystem, Jenny Craig, Weight Watchers, Protein Shakes, fasting, low carb, soup diet, you name it I probably did it. And always it seems that my body wants to come back to size 16/18.
I have found that dieting doesn't work permanently. Yes, you'll loose a few pounds or a lot but then when you get back to normal you begin to gain weight and sometimes even more then you weighed before if you don't learn to change the food and portions you eat.
Our bodies have only so many fat cells. Then we don't produce anymore when we get to a certain age. When we gain weight we are enlarging those fat cells. When we loose weight we reduce them. Lypo suction takes away some of those fat cells but the ones that remain will enlarge when you gain weight so lypo suction to be skinny isn't the answer either. I'm not a fan of intestinal bypass, lap bands, etc either. I've known too many people who have done this and have not changed their life habits and thus gained weight. I also knew one person who died from complications at the age of 28 and this was even after a few years of the surgery. I guess if I were morbidly obese and I would say that would be pushing 400 pounds for me, then I would consider it because I'm going to die one way or another at this point. It all comes back to exercise and eating healthy and sensibly the natural way. This is the only thing that works long term.
I agree with the others that eating to be healthy is the important thing. It's just not in our genes to all be skinny. It sounds like you eat healthy Joyce, and like me it probably is the portions. I love to cook and I love food! I don't eat because I'm sad, or happy. I eat because I enjoy it. As we get older our metabolism slows down and we really need to eat less to loose the weight or maintain. Also watch what types of carbs you are eating. Try to stick with whole grains and not processed carbs.
I'm sadden that Queen Latifah has joined this fad. I think she looks fabulous just the way she is!
I'm going to do the "Law of Attraction"....My mind and body is healthy. I love me. I know that I will maintain a healthy body. Through this mantra I will become what I am suppose to be. -

Re: BBW Celebs / Jenny Craig Spokesmodels - do these plans really work?
Fri, February 22, 2008 - 12:40 PMI also love Queen Latifa just the way she is and personally, I think she looks completely healthy and gorgeous.
I know I need to lose weight. Health issues and comfort eating during those issues caused me to put on almost 40 pounds very quickly. I'm only 5'2" and topped out at 201 pounds! Some new medications have helped me stop the comfort eating and I have dropped my weight down to 188 pounds but I still would like to lose the other 30 pounds. Time will tell, but for me, portion control and no comfort-eating seems to be the key. Of course, I need to up my exercise from basically zero at the moment ((sorry)). Let's just say I'm a work in progress.

Re: BBW Celebs / Jenny Craig Spokesmodels - do these plans really work?
Sat, March 1, 2008 - 10:43 AMHi Joyce-
Without using any special diet programs like Jenny Craig, NutriSystem, et. al., my hubby simply engaged in portion control and proper exercise and lost 25 lbs in 9 weeks. I agree with many others in that you will likely lose weight while still on a given program, but as soon as you are on your own, you will gain everything back, unless you have learned about proper food portions, how to read a nutrition label, getting enough exercise, etc.
Scientific studies on various diet plans have shown that the most succesful plan is Weight Watchers. It gives you a support group, teaches you portion control, you learn how to shop for the right foods, cook the right foods, etc.
But I have to ask, are there other factors you haven't considered? Are you on any medications that cause weight gain or water retention? This can make weight loss a lot harder, not matter how healthy of a diet you have. Any medical conditions like maybe a thyroid problem? This can also cause weight gain. Just want to make sure that you are considering all possible avenues.
