Hi I want to look really beautiful when dancing like all of my dance sisters.
but I end up feeling like a beach ball and am so worried that I am making a full out of myself
I do dance with two troupes and the one in my photo are really lovely and are very supported.
But the other troupe? I am the biggest and couple of girls aren't all that nice. I know I shouldn't worry but!.
any hints on costumes ?
I made a 10yrd skirt with three tiers but didn't look right I think I need more tiers?
I am big in the belly so skirts rise up in the front. I have been losing weight mainly my chest .
losing weight for me isn't easy as I'm on medication for an illness I have.
I love to dance, now I want to look good as I feel .
Any help thanks

I totally understand where you are coming from!!!

However, if the girls in one of the groups you dance with are not nice to you, then DON'T BE A PART OF THAT GROUP!!!!!

As far as feeling beautiful...It has taken me a very very long time to be comfortable in my skin and to be honest, most days I'm still not comfortable with myself...Even when I get all fixed up with pretty make up and hair and a nice costume...I still feel like a fat lard.

You have to look on the different tribes and see what us big girls are wearing and how we cover up our "ugly" bits...It's a trial and error type thing and believe me I have had LOTS of errors.

I don't know how to help you with your skirt because I don't sew...Sorry 'bout that!

    Keep your chin up .
    Happy Dancing!

Yeah, we should support not bash each other. Those girls are dancing for the wrong reasons if they think that making fun of someone's body type is ok. Whatever you feel comfortable in should be fine. Dont let those hookers dictate what you wear and especially how you feel.

Tempest, I have to agree with Renee. If you are not treated with respect and dignity from the girls in one of your troupes than perhaps you should consider leaving that troupe. Being comfortable with who you dance with is as important as being comfortable with yourself as a dancer.

    Best wishes,

I don't understand for sure what "too big" means. Clearly you know what you're doing or you wouldn't be in two different groups. i'm sure you are very talented and look lovely. Costuming can be a challenge. I have seen a web site where the lady makes skirts to allow for the hikes that belly's and ample butts can cause. creationsbyangelia.com/bellyd...dex.htm

Why thanks for remembering my site! Irena

yes I do make skirts that acomodate for booty or belly hike =)

Its just part of the game =)

And if people are being disrespectful of you Tempest, dont dance with them any longer. It isnt worth your sanity and self doubt to be put down on a regular basis. If you were here in Oregon, I would invite you to come dance in Eugene at our Hoflas!!! bi monthly and put on by wonderful ladies who make everyone feel welcome, even if you have never danced in your life.

I am a firm believer in self confidence, and it shows when you have it =0 Dont let other people's opinions get you down. I am a victim of this at times, and for sure my dance suffers... my life suffers. I refuse to suffer =)

        Blessings in What you do!

Its just easier to sew as I go, because then I dont have to worry about "fitting" each item =) its already made to size!

But... if you are evern in Sweet Home... PLEASE let me know =) I always love to show off stuff... ahaha

If you're dancing with people who are jerks, let them know their jerkiness bothers you or just don't dance with them.

Part of the beauty of group bellydance is that each body looks different. You aren't any more or less beautiful than the other dancers, trust me. The more you are relaxed and confident in your body, the more obvious that will be.

    Costume advice:
Either having the skirt made slightly longer in back or shorter in front helps it balance out. Some of the dancers I work with pin their skirts to their pants and their pants to their undies - this keeps everything in position, and a heavy belt on top of that adds to the security.
One of the things that bigger dancers often do that I think looks a little unusual in a group of mixed-sized dancers is cover their tummies. The black leotard or black mesh look, while it hides the belly, also reduces the difference between top, belly and skirt - that difference is part of how dance costumes emphasize the curve of your body. If you're feeling self-conscious and apple-shaped, wear a skin-toned bodysuit or bare the belly. Trust me. :)

Tempest, are you the one in the front of the picture with the green/turquoise skirt on? You are beautiful! I love your top!

I too wouldn't dance with a troupe where the members are not nice to one another. If it's just a few of them and not all, then I would continue with confidence in yourself and eventually they will get it.....or not.

I had this experience recently at a different studio that my friend and I decided to take lessons at. We came into the advanced group and the ladies in this group had danced with eachother for a few years and were all very thin. They kinda looked at us with an attitude of why were we there? So my friend and I just danced, showed them we weren't going to let their clickishness get to us and they eventually accepted us. There is probably one young student who thinks we are too fat and old to be in the group, but she'll just have to get over it because no one is stopping me from doing what I want to do.

You can't control what others think or do, you can only control yourself. So have confidence in yourself and do what you want to do.

Costuming for any size woman is important. If it is not flattering to your shape or color then it is going to look awful. If you feel more comfortable in covering your belly, then do so. If not, then don't. But from your picture I think you look just fabulous!

Shimmy till you can't no more.....

Thanks for all your nice comments.
I haven't posted a picture of me yet.
will do when I get some.

I don't want to give up dancing with the troupe as the other ladies are all nice.
But i know that I'll which troupe I would dance with in public.
I feel if I can get my skirt to hang properly then I will feel better.
Not sue if I can show a bare tummy yet.
      Thanks

i recommend the costume goddess book #1. it tells you what types of skirts and costume you should wear for your type of figure! I will also post what i recommend. You can try it and see if it works for you. It might not but its worth a try. Please dont take it the wrong way. There are many opinions on this subject...this is just mine

One thing i realized since i am short that circle skirts, tiered skirts or A-line skirts make me look shorter and fatter! Mermaid skirts are the best. i love them and they love me! I really dont think they could go wrong on anyone. i also wear straight skirts on occation. So im recommending if you can, wear a mermaid style skirt. Looks like the lady on the right side of your main photo has a mermaid style skirt. Better yet, start wearing beledi dresses!!!! you can buy patterns here shop.vendio.com/guardcat/category/7309/ this will cover my next recommendation.

Try wearing one color from top to bottom. I will make a difference! if you break it up into different color on top and different colors on the bottom its setting yourself up for looking bigger then you actually are! Try wearing all one color. From your bra, to your skirt, to your belt...it should all be 1 color. Or wear a dress. Check out my profile photos and you will see that i wear all one color. Even look at Naimah photo on the main page of this tribe. She is wearing all one color with accents in blue. Check out Nisha bigbeautifulbellydancers.tribe.net/photos/7e0e9feb-1e11-4d68-8501-0a678350d588 again all one color with and accent color. You can accent in another color such as the beads or coins on your hip belt, necklace and of course you could use a different color veil.

you can also wear an accent color skirt underneath your main colored skirt. for example people.tribe.net/shaynaz/p...b786972208

Try to avoid big decorations in the front.

    Try to avoid horizontal lines.

Can I just mention the one thing I and a few of my troupe members have noticed about being a larger woman? Skinny girls cannot get the same shake that we bigger girls can. Our shimmies look fantastic, and it's because we have more "jiggle". (Not that some skinny ladies don't have fantastic shimmies as well, that's not what I meant), but for us it isn't as hard. That's got to be a plus, right?

As for the skirt problem, what some of my troupe memebers and myself do is to take each of the two sides of our skirts and hike them up and tuck the top into our skirts , pantaloons, belts, whatever on the sides, so that you get a nice flash of pantaloon. It disguises the hemline of the skirt so no one can tell if it's shorter or longer in back. (Then again, it will only work with some styles, and my troupe tends towards the tribal look). Hope that helps!

        Hi Tempest,

Please stop worrying about your skirt or any other part of your costume. You are obviously a good dancer but it sounds like your self-confidence has taken a hit because of the remarks you've had to hear about yourself. I know it's a cliche but it's so true that what makes you beautiful is how you feel about yourself. That's what makes any woman, dancer or not, beautiful.

I've been in the place where you are now and what worked for me was to not focus on anything but getting my self-esteem and confidence back on a high again. Ignore these women - they're probably threatened by the fact that you can dance well, probably better than they can. Some people just can't seem to cope when another person comes along and shatters the stereotype of what a BBW should or shouldn't do. Let's face it, a typical stereotype for the larger dancer is that she can't be graceful or dance well or even dance at all. These women are using you to bolster their own flagging self-esteem. Take back the power, lift your head, get your shoulders back and be the best dancer you can be. Believe me, that more than anything will grind their faces in the dirt and you won't have had to say a word or even acknowledge them.

Sounds like most of your responses gave tips on what to wear if you are a tribal dancer. My ladies and I dance Egyptian style and wear full gowns or folkloric dresses. I think it is important, whatever you decide to wear, that it works with your special body type. Second, I think you have to feel good in it.

All of the women in my troupe are either full-figured, older or women of color of all sizes and I had to find a way for all of the women to feel good in what we wear. I struggled for years trying to work with the bras and belts and always ended feeling like something was going to fall down, especially because I am not shaped like women who have the longer torsos and big hips. I've got big breasts. A short torso. Big butt and long legs. And, I've always been full-figured. Personally, I'm happier in the gowns and feel more feminine.

About your troupe. I'd suggest talking with your troupe leader. Her job is to make sure that everyone who dances with her feels comfortable. It's an issue that needs to be brought up for discussion. This is supposed to be an inclusive dance and you may just have to say out loud that at times you don't feel comfortable in the group for so and so and such and such reason.

A suggestion for your troupe leader also is to sometimes accommodate your needs as a full-figured dancers in the choices you all are going to wear as a troupe. Sheer tummy covers...nets, etc. Ghawazee coats with decorated bras, etc. You've got to speak up and remember that you are a beautiful women but, truth is that our culture is only now the the cusp of understanding to accept all colors, sizes, shapes...you get my drift. I wish you the best :)

"A suggestion for your troupe leader also is to sometimes accommodate your needs as a full-figured dancers in the choices you all are going to wear as a troupe."

We are going through this with our troupe. Our troupe consists of women of varying age, size and ethnicity. We primarily dance Egyptian Cabaret and folkloric dance. Our costumes are very glittzy. We want to allow everyone to feel comfortable in their costumes and yet have a troupe look. So what we are opting to do is that we all have a same color bra and belt set, but that we can individualize our look with arm coverings, tummy covers, etc. and yet still coordinate as a troupe. I don't feel comfortable dancing without arm covers. I would constantly be thinking about my bat wings and it would affect my dance. And I stated that to the troupe. But there are others who have great arms and shouldn't be required to cover them if they don't want to. I think when a certain costume is required for everyone and everyone doesn't look good in it, it just stands out more to the audience. For example at weddings. Not all bridesmaid dresses look good in the same style dress - we've all seen this happen!

Doing what you need to feel good about yourself is the most important thing. If wearing a certain style costume doesn't make you feel good, then I wouldn't do it. I think that I would quit a troupe and create my own before I would go on stage feeling awful. Part of your dance is your presence and if you aren't happy in how you look or feel, then your dance is going to show it.

Going back to the other part of the post.....I remembered what my therapist once told me. I can't control what others think of me, all I can do is control myself. So if I allow others to affect who I am then it is me allowing this to happen. So I must choose to not allow others to affect me in that way. We are in control of our own happiness.

    Hi Tempest!
2 things that I can think of that will help make you beautiful in costume is:
    1. Posture!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    2. Attitude!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you have these 2 things it will not really matter what you are wearing (now.. of course wearing things that fit well is essential and as someone else said, that is trial and error.. you will probably have to learn to sew to be able to modify and/or make your own costumes)

If you are wearing something beautiful and you slouch or walk funny that makes everything else noticeable and then the costume doesn't wear right, if you exude confidence, people will believe that and it will flow off you and on to them. Be happy in your dance and others will be happy to watch you. Seriously, it really will shine through!

there are ways to wear skirts, especially with scarfs, belts, etc that will make them balance out, you can also pin them in fun ways so that it wont ride up. play around with it.

as for the other thang... the not so nice girls, Iwould speak to your troupe director, tell her how you are feeling. If she happens to be one of the not so nice people then I would think about dancing with other people that support you. This is not the time or place where you should feel bad about yourself... not with your troupe members.. that is the point.

I've been dealing with this whole thing about being in a troupe with all smaller women for years now and I am usually ok with it .. until they come up with costuming that is entirely unflattering on my body. I know how you feel. But, I talk it out with my director and ask if I can make modifications that make me feel comfortable and still keeps in line with the main costuming. It can be done!

If you have any more questions about how to feel better in costuming, feel free to PM me.. I may have some suggestions!

    Good Luck!
    H.

      Attitude for sure!!!!
and posture wow it really does make a difference,
after years of bad posture you really have to become mindful of it! at least I do!
I hope your dance sister treat you with more respect, if not I agree with many others, more on to a more accepting group!
      peace & harmony

You have to have Attitude, Attitude, ATTITUDE! Is there a more accepting group that is in your area? If not, maybe it's time to find some like minded individuals to start your own.
Remember, respect yourself, tell yourself everyday how wonderful you are and tell yourself that you love YOU! Everything works in tandem, so work it all together.......be compassionate with yourself too.

          posture all the way !
I tell my students to go and buy a nice big coffee, sit in the window of the coffee shop and people watch for an hour. The beautiful people come in all sizes, shapes and ages, but they all have great posture. Sure the 15 year olds who are all leg are beautiful, but in a different way. Those men and women who really turn heads all command the space, whatever they are wearing looks fab, because it hangs off that great posture, their eyes are up and interested in everything thats going on. And the crowds clear for them, heads really do turn - they have a presence, a beauty that we can all have, with just a change of attitude and a little bit of work.

I recently flew with my dad who said it was amazing to walk through the busy holding area with me, cos we just walked through the middle of the crowds and people were stepping out of our way. Not in a nasty way - I just knew where we were going and had my head up, my feet going and a bright, sunny smile for all. Try it - its fun !

Hi! My advice echos alot of everyone else's, I believe. Either ignore those women who aren't nice to you, or quit. You don't need to be subjected to their attitudes. They are probablly really insecure about something or another, and this is their way of feeling better about themselves. Of course if you really like that troupe, just stick with the people that you get along good with. I'm happy that the other troupe is more supportive.

Sounds like a self-esteem issue. I know what you mean though. It's easy to look at all the smaller girls, and compare yourself to them, but what I like to remember is there are always people who are fatter, and thinner than I am. Good costuming also can help with that. I know it's going to sound a little insane, but perhaps think about trying a mesh middle unitard. At first, I would wear form fitting tank tops, with tribal stuff over top of it which looked alright. But they'd always ride up, or cling un-attractively to bulges ands rolls. But the mesh, stays smooth, and since mine is a power mesh, it holds you in place and doesn't stick to rolls and so on. It actually makes me look thinner, I think, than a regular shirt.

Another lesson I learned froma troupe performance is : don't wear your skirt too low. A few of the smaller girls from my troupe did , and it made them look quite large. Not that there's anything wrong with being quite large, but yknow what I mean? They are smaller than me, and I looked smaller than they did because my skirt wasn't below my belly.

Perhaps another thing to try would be creating a dance persona. The you in real life might feel intimidated, repressed, so on........... but the stage you doesn't need to feel anything negative. That's helped me alot.

    Hope that helps!

This is a link to a photo gallery. When you get the the Empty Bowls performance photos, there's where I'm talking about the thin girls wearing the skirts lower, and so on. I plan to upload them here, but haven't, yet.

    Thanks!!!!!!!!!
