Beautiful Dancer Pants

I have seen many questions on this tribe on Plus size pants and I thought I'd give some input on my experience.

I have found some beautiful pants at ShimmySista.com that fit great and are top notch quality at a great price. They have a great selection so you don't have to settle for the plain old stretch pants anymore.
Glenna of Shimmy Sista is awesome and oh so helpful.

It's been a little quiet here.....what is everyone up to?

How is everyone's summer? What is everyone doing? Any fun and exciting dance activities?

Yasmine, my teacher, Debbie and I are going to Ya Halla Ya All in Texas next month! Debbie and I are dancing a duet together. Look for Bashira Bellydance if you are attending.

I have been celebrating my 50th birthday (month long celebration in July)!

Our troupe, Beledi Beat will be performing at Pride Charlotte this weekend along with Yasmine's Student Recital on Sunday. And we are getting ready for the Carolina Renaissance Faire coming up in October!

Between dancing, and traveling all over the place on weekends with hubby, this summer has been very busy but fun! Hope everyone else is having a great summer! I must admit, I ready for cooler weather!

Workshop Wear

So I get to go to ShimmyFest (www.shimmyfest.com) Whooppee!!! It will be my first ever workshop, and I'm so excited. But then the question comes up---What to wear, what to wear? What is the norm for this type of workshop? Normal practice gear-hipscarf, tanktop, etc, or something special?

Thanks!

Hey Everyone! I just wanted to share some amazing news with who else? but my fellow BBB. I was just asked by one of the most prominent BD in the Cleveland area to perform a SOLO!! at her annual workshop and show! I am soo excited. She saw me perform at our last show and called my teacher to extend the invite to me! I am so excited, it is an annual workshop and show that anticipated by not only the BD community but the ME community (for the show) as well. Last year she hosted Hadia and this year is Sadie http://www.windandsand.com/events/index.htm. I was really looking forward to the workshop anyway as I have loved Sadie ever since I saw her amazing drum solo on youtube ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=obQOJRmsXX0 ) but now I am super stoked! I am out to represent all the BBB. We will conquer them one show at a time-lol.

This is a vote for the new dates for Goddess fest.
I can have in during a four day week that means Sun-Thurs, or weekend friday-mon. Either way it has to be four days.
Weekends means higher prices for you and weekdays mean reasonable prices. I'll leave this open for you.
I'm also leaving the season open. Summer, Fall, Winter, or spring.

The skirt in the photo is going to be a costume with a mermaid theme and the hipband will be freeform crochet with seashells and beads embedded in it.

On one of my other message boards, a girl just opened up a new site for ladies like us. I just got my order yesterday, and I LOVE it, so I had to share! I will try to post pictures when I have some extra time. Anyway, I just wanted to spread the word. Everything fits me great, and the pants are long enough that they don't highwater! I'm about 5'8" and a street size 22/24. Her website is www.shimmysista.com.

Happy shopping!

I would like everyone who reads this board regularly to do me a tiny and fun favor. Look at the tribe photos and select at least one and flag it as 'best of tribe' using the little button near the opened photo. Give some love to those that take the time to share their photos and the photos of other dancers they admire. It will only take a few minutes of your day. Thanks.

After burning the soles of my feet today on hot concrete during a performance, I've decided I need some sandals or ghillies or something. I would prefer some pretty sandals but I've plus sized tootsies in addition to the rest of me. :) Size 13 since they spread my recent pregnancy.. I haven't found anything over an 11 and most seem to end at a 10. Anyone else have this problem and found something?

I can sew fairly well enough myself, so I am not looking to buy pre-made. All I am looking for are patterns and fabrics so I can make one on my own. Thanks for your help!

Fat Momma is Coming Around Full Circle

I don't know if you remember me discussing my son in law in January calling me fat behind his back in Jan. I believe that everything comes full circle and now the circle is hitting my son in law Mike in the butt! His daughter is getting married and told my daughter she wanted me to do her wedding flowers. I use to own a flower shop but sold it in May of 2004 for I was so sick with cancer etc.. and I am jumping with joy because I told Antoinette (daughter) that I was not doing her flowers for some one who hates me, and that they needed to find a skinny florist, that doesn't have piercings or tattoos and a florist who is not a belly dancer!

God should strike me dead for gleefully jumping with great joy for I haven't spoken to Mike since January. Told Antoinette I did not like the way he has treated me nor my granddaughters!

Just wanted to let you know that fat belly dancer's grand momma can be spiteful and ugly too! This will cost him thousands of dollars for I expected they didn't think I would charge for my labor and just the costs of the flowers.

Aren't I ugly? I haven't lost any weight either!

The only problem I seem to be having is with mayas, I have big hips... and I mean big... and I'm not sure why but it just doesn't look right when I try to do them, I'm not sure if it's just me, either, but any help would be appreciated.. specially tips on how to maya if you have huge hips like me hehe

Hi I want to look really beautiful when dancing like all of my dance sisters.
but I end up feeling like a beach ball and am so worried that I am making a full out of myself
I do dance with two troupes and the one in my photo are really lovely and are very supported.
But the other troupe? I am the biggest and couple of girls aren't all that nice. I know I shouldn't worry but!.
any hints on costumes ?
I made a 10yrd skirt with three tiers but didn't look right I think I need more tiers?
I am big in the belly so skirts rise up in the front. I have been losing weight mainly my chest .
losing weight for me isn't easy as I'm on medication for an illness I have.
I love to dance, now I want to look good as I feel .
Any help thanks

I would recommend feedback and some thoughts on new stock colours. I am stocking black, gold and wine in the tie front style but there are 18 colours available altogether. Does anyone prefer pastels?

I am the local dancer that is doing one of the side shows!!! So come out and see it!

We’ve also added clowning, aerial dance, feats of strength and dexterity, live musical variety acts, and a sideshow the likes of which have never been seen anywhere. All of this is framed by a touching pantomime of two young lovers whose lives are torn asunder by the winds of fate and the whirl of the circus.

*** Hey, parents! The BIG TOP is a family-friendly show, so we're offering special rate for kids at every show on our tour. Bring your whole family and let them see a vision of size acceptance that is revolutionary and fun.

BigMoves is dedicated to creating high-quality, multi-genre dance
productions featuring performers of all sizes. Because performance
dance in the Western tradition has historically been restricted to thin bodies, BigMoves is particularly focused on providing training and performance opportunities for dancers who are larger than dance world norms. Our outreach and education programs promote self-acceptance and self-love for all dancers, of any size and all skill levels, as they work toward growing and fine-tuning their range of abilities, technique, and expression through movement. We are a community of pioneers, banded together to support each other in expanding and exploring the boundaries of the dancer’s body. Ultimately, these explorations are directed at nothing less than a paradigm shift, toward a society in which size diversity is celebrated, not feared.

BigMoves was founded in 2000 by Marina Wolf Ahmad, a plus-size dancer who wanted to create community, training opportunities, and
performances for herself and other dancers who otherwise were left out of the dance mainstream. The organization began operations in the San Francisco Bay Area, and expanded to Boston in January 2005, and to New York in May of 2006. These three areas have their own branches of Big Moves, and Boston additionally is the home base for a touring company that reaches to Montréal, Philadelphia, Washington DC, as well as other locations along the East Coast.

BigMoves is award-winning. Internationally award-winning. Our revival
of Gargantua got rave reviews from audiences and thumbs-up from the critics, and we brought back the prestigious Spirit of the Fringe award from the Montréal Fringe Festival in June. Naturally, this sort of honor just makes us leap higher at the brass ring of greatness, which means that our fans and sponsors can be sure they are supporting some of the best and most groundbreaking performances in the field of size-accepting dance and theater.

I have always been a large-framed woman....broad shoulders...proud of my curvy hips and how it all looks when I dance. After the birth of my daughter, I seem to have "loose skin" on my midsection. Can anyone suggest light exersize or costuming choices to minimize the appearance of the loose skin?

Tired of anorexic models getting all the publicity? Are you fed up with plastic surgeons and diet pill ads that make you feel like it's a crime to be different?
You are not alone!
Visit this new space, http://www.myspace.com/nodietingday, and add them to help support International No Dieting Day, an event organized by my sister on UCLA campus in Los Angeles. This event has been created to help people learn how to love their body just the way it is and learn about healthy lifestyle choices. If you already feel comfortable in your skin, great, but this could be the opportunity to help someone who's about to make decisions that will affect them for the rest of their life.

I am SO excited, and I just had to come and share my find!

I recently purchased a pair of 2x/3x Gaucho Dance Pants from Moondancebellydance.com, and they fit me!

I am a size 22-24, and 5'8", and they managed to go all the way around with still a little extra in the waist line, and they are long enough that they touch the floor!

For $30, not a bad deal at all!

YAY!!! I am so glad someone told me about this group. I was getting worried that I was the only Big Beautiful Bellydancer on Tribe. LOL
I am new to bellydancing. Only been going to classes for 2 months and love it. But I get so self-conscious when I go to class because most of the ladies are so skinny with gorgeous bodies. It doesn't help when I am dancing in front of a HUGE mirror that is not very friendly or flattering to my figure. LOL Anyway... I found that since I am not used to showing my tummy at all that I was allowing it to distract me from class. I was too busy worrying about people staring at me and me having to keep pulling my shirt down so my stomach wouldn't show. Lots of people have said to me that bellydancing originated with big women like myself and that bellydance is very embracing of tummies and full figured women. BUT I couldn't help but notice that now a days MOST of the bellydancers are skinny and have perfect tummies. LOL. OH WELL. sorry for going on and on. I just wanted to thank you for creating this group. I feel like I fit in here. I also joined the other BBB group for Tribal!

Baby Blue "Shayna Original" Plus size

I am selling my baby blue! i made it for my performance when i was pregnant. Ive gotten photos of me in it with and without baby! And i knew that id be selling it afterwards. But i guess lets just see if anyone is interested!!! cuz its loaded!!! here are the specs... it has 90 large sew on swarovski rhinestone crystals, 12 yards 29" of swarovski rhinestone on chain which i pretty much figured out its 2305 swarovski chrystals!!! covered with baby blue seed beads, and some sequins. it has bugle beaded fringe in 3 shades of blue as well as silver "V" shaped fringe in front and back. i made this costume with love! it also was nice, calming and relaxing when i was adding the beads onto it. I used upolsery thread to put on the beads so nothings coming off here!

bra is D/DD i used a lane bryant 44D cuped bra. right now hooks are set at 40 but it can be expandable to 45". The bra also has the straps that "X" in the back. the straps are set at 22" but i know i made those larger so those can be extended out as well. the straps also hook in the front for easy closure. They are also reinforced with velcro. The top of the straps also have the softer velcro because i velcroed my isis wings to my bra because i hate anything tight on my neck. ISIS WINGS ARE NOT INCLUDED

the belt is set right now at 46" but can be expandable to 54" the hooks are also reinforced with velcro. its in a "V" shape.

this set also comes with a head band and beledi style dress made from glitter slinky baby blue fabric. Unstretched it measures at 46 waist and 50" at the hips. the length from the top to the floor is 54". it has a U neck line so it goes under the bra. it also comes with a matching head piece.

so this set includes bra, belt, headpiece and dress. im asking $950 plus shipping. Shipping costs will be up to the buyer on how you want me to ship but it will need to be a trackable method as well as insurance. you can email me at shay at shaynaz dot com any questions let me know!

you can see it in action here... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eyEpZ5QLTyk

Floor work for voluptuous ladies

I've never been comfortable doing floor work because of my size. I can get down okay, just can't get up gracefully.

I would like to incorporate a little floorwork and maybe work my way up to doing some more complicated stuff but I'm just not in good enough shape yet.

I was wondering if you guys might be able to give me some tips on getting myself in condition for floorwork. Any thigh stretches, exercises or drills that might be helpful, or floor work moves that work for you.

I apologize if this has been covered in another topic.

Any help would be much appreciated. :)

buyer beware: isis exchange

Buyer Beware: ISIS EXCHANGE

“How to make Egyptian dressmakers starve by ordering & returning a belly dance costume”

Great place to order from, if you don’t inquire as to when your costume will be delivered, or need to make an exchange. Or expect them to do much to follow through... Yup.. that’s “good customer service”

http://www.isisexchange.com/

Isis Exchange’s BBB Report: http://www.bbbsoutheastflorida.org/BBBWeb/Forms/Business/CompanyReportPage_Expository.aspx?CompanyID=11008931

----------Back Story------------------------------------------------

My troupe pitched in to buy me a nice, professional styled costume as a way to thank me for all of the work I put into getting our troupe up and running.

Being a non-standard portioned person (minimal chest, broad hips, plus a jiggly mid section), I knew that I would need to order a custom costume to have a matching bra & belt. I found a beautiful and unique costume at Isis Exchange and I was sooo happy to have discovered a company that not only offered a unique custom made costume, but a reasonable price. Without much hesitation, I ordered from them in early December ‘07.

In Jan ‘08, I received my costume- only to discover, that indeed the costume was beautiful, but by no means made to my exact measurements (as promised by Isis Exchange). The single piece gown’s torso was incredibly long– if the thigh slit sat where it was supposed to, then the hard cupped breast forms came to just under my chin! If I put the boobs where they are meant to go, the thigh slit was just above my knee. This was not a costume I could dance in! Not to mention that the zipper popped, and there were several highly visible white tailor paint markings across the bodice (that I could not easily remove). Sadly, I had to return this gown and exchange it for something more safe (ie not incur the length problem) and that could be produced in a shorter time frame for my March show. Because all exchanges are not offered a refund, but a 75% credit to be used at the store, I was stuck re-ordering another costume.

I spoke with Mou, the production manager, and he was very friendly and seemed to understand my dilemma. He helped me select another costume, and I was feeling pretty good about the whole thing, tho’ more than a little nervous about the time frame. He told me that my order would be submitted right away.

Through out the rest of Jan, I had not received a invoice or purchase order, so I emailed the company, and I received an invoice on Feb 12, 2008. I have honestly come to believe that my order was not even submitted until I contacted the company!!! Anyway this invoice had an expected date of March 5. Sweet! 10 days before my performance! I was very excited.

----------Here’s where it gets more dramatic-------------

March 10— No costume. I called the company, and managed to speak with Billy. I explained my concerns to him. I was informed that my costume would arrive early next week (two days too late for my performance), I asked if was joking, and said that this is unacceptable. He told me he would look into and call me back by the end of the day.

March 11- Getting more worried, I called Isis Exchange. No answer. I left a message. I called back an hour later, this I time I spoke with a woman who assured me that she would look into the matter.

No response 2 hours later, I called again, and spoke with Billy yet again. He wanted to know what was wrong with the original costume. I explained the fit problem, and I was informed that Isis Exchange employs a dressmaker who is 55 years old, near retirement, and that at least 8-10 costumes recently have been returned to fit problems!! I was shocked! Wow! 8-10 people have been through what I am going through? Have they gotten an apology, unlike myself? Billy again assured me that he would call me back, after he spoke with his production manager. I asked when I could expect to hear back from him, he did not provide an answer, so I informed him that I wanted to hear back from him within 15-30 minutes.

The afternoon passed, and I had no contact from them. So I called again (If you ever need to call Isis Exchange, expect to not have the phone answered at any time in your ordering experience until you call them at least 10 times– seriously). During this time, I left two messages- one apologizing for my earlier shortness and I provided two solutions for Isis Exchange... the first being that my costume is overnighted from Egypt to me, at no additional shipping charge, the second the costume arrives late with a refund. My second message was a request to get the promised call back.

Finally my phone rings, and it’s Billy– he begins by saying “you called me 20 times- I had to step out of the office. Our internet is down. I’m working off a laptop, I have to go outside to find a wireless internet connection.” I offered to forward all of the emails I had from Isis Exchage so he could access my records. I was now informed that my costume was still in production, that there was no way I could have in time for my show. I was also told that my costume should have fit, as the hips stretch to 54" (and that folks is why the zipper popped!). I am embarrassed to say, but I not so kindly expressed my disappointment. Our phone conversation ends with him saying that he will contact his production manager (Mou) and that only Mou has the authority to issue refunds.

Three hours later- I hear from Mou. Mou wanted to know what was wrong my original costume. I explained to him the details. He then asked what I wanted from them. I repeated my two options for them. I was told, and I had to repeat this back to him twice out of disbelief- he offered to send me my original ill-fitting costume, or to send my the second costume as soon as it came (early next week). There was no way my costume would be shipped any sooner. Again, I explained my disappointment to him. I was then asked again what I wanted, “I said an apology would go along way right now.” He then shouted at me, and said that I was being a very difficult customer– “that there was no way of pleasing me, that he had already lost a significant amount of money a costume that was perfectly fine and fit me, that he had no desire to do business with me, and that people in Egypt were starving” (no I am not kidding here) because of my returning a costume. I was informed by Mou that “handmade items are not perfect, and that there are always errors....that an exact fit is not possible” Well, of course, I became the difficult customer he made me to be. Unfortunately, we shouted back and forth at each other. Finally, he offered to cancel my order and give me 75% refund less his shipping expenses (of what I am not exactly sure...the costume? A check in the mail?). I was pushing for a full refund and an apology– which wasn’t happening. I finally kowtowed, and had to shout this over his continuing litany of “difficult customer, starving Egyptians, I don’t want to do business with you” to be heard. I agreed to accept the second costume late, but as long as he understood how disappointed I am with Isis Exchange and that I would try to warn as many dancers as possible from using his company.

So– yes I must admit at times in dealing with Isis Exchange over the past two days I have acted like a tantrum two year old. I am not proud of my behavior, but sadly it took so much action on my behalf to find out the status of my order, and to come with up solutions to this debacle. I did not want to rip off Isis Exchange, but I did want what was promised to me when it was promised to me. The costume is due to arrive a few days post performance :-( I am hoping that will be a good fit, or at least can be altered on my end to achieve that sought after fit.

I realize not everyone has had a bad experience with this company. I read in an earlier posting, that someone had a friend who had a terrible experience with Isis Exchange, but with no explanation why. I decided to share my dealings with them to help provide better information, and to prevent someone living through this same ordeal. Hopefully this costume will provide me with enough dancing bliss to be able to overcome this crudy experience.

If you choose to order through Isis Exchange, may you have a wonderful experience and be treated well.

Please contact me if you have any questions-
Halimah bint Isadore

-----Isis Exchange’s Verbage-----------------------------

According to their website:

Off the listing of the Original Costume I ordered: (CST005)
“If you are not in rush, you can order this costume at your exact measurements.”

Return Policy:

“If you received your package in a bad condition or simply you do not like the item within 3 days of receiving it, you can ship it back for a full refund or an immediate exchange for no additional S&H costs. No questions asked!

Any special orders can not be returned for a full refund. However, they can be returned for 75% of the purchase price as a Store Credit only and it must be returned within 3 days of receipt.”

As for the starving Egyptians:
(again from their website, under “about us”)

“We are firm advocate against child labor & "Sweat Shops". We personally see to it that our employees are fairly compensated for their hard work, have good working conditions and fair pay.”

Why did you choose to be a bellydancer?

As a BBBD, what made you decide to become a bellydancer? I hear so many times about BBBDs who have struggled with being a bellydancer, whether their self image or outside influences are the causes of these struggles. But something drew you to this art form, so what was it for you that made you decide to pursue this.

Hello lovely ladies....
I would really like everyones thoughts, opinions or guidance when selecting a costume. Next March is our troupes first big event. We are excited and well sort of nervous. One of our members is doing a solo, and wanted to purchase a fancier cabaret costume. She is very unsure of fitting into one. This is the one she has fallen in love with. outfit.http://isisexchange.com/gorgeous-belly-dance-costume-evening-gown-p-425.html
Her build is a wider hips base, giggly middle, and no chest (42 A). Isis Exchange makes them to your size which is great. But when ya spend that kind of money, you really want to make sure it's flattering on you. So I'd love to gather advice to share with my dance sister. She is a great dancer and her solo piece will be even more spectacular in a glitzy outfit.http://isisexchange.com/gorgeous-belly-dance-costume-evening-gown-p-425.html

X-POST: Big Beautiful Belly Dancer 2008 Calendar call for photos

Greetings all belly dancing beauties!

Last winter, an idea was brought up to create a calendar featuring our big, beautiful, belly-dancer (BBBD) sisters and there was such a huge, positive response that this idea has become a reality!

The creative mindset behind this idea, BBBD Meghan, asked BBBD Kamala Devi to chair this project, and with the help of some very motivated BBBD sisters, we are pleased to announce that we are now accepting applications from other BBBD sisters for the BBBD 2008 Calendar!

Click on the following link for additional information:

http://totallynortherntribal.com/BBBD.Calendar.htm

Please read all the information carefully and follow the instructions. If you have any questions, please send a Tribe PM to Calendar chairperson Kamala Devi.

The deadline for your application is July 31, 2008.

We are all looking forward to this project and are eager to see how the calendar turns out. We hope that this is successful enough to become an annual calendar.

Thanks everyone!

Kamala Devi and the BBBD 2008 Calendar Committee

DISCLAIMER: there is no connection between Totally Northern Tribal (TNT) and the BBBD 2008 Calendar. Calendar chairperson Kamala Devi, a member of TNT, linked off her TNT Member’s Page.

Larger sized coing belts?

I'm taking a belly dance class, and one of the dancers is having trouble finding a coin belt large enough for her. I thought you wonderful people might have some resources for her.

We are in the San Francisco Bay Area, so something local would be fabulous, but online can be made to work.

Thanks!!

BBW Celebs / Jenny Craig Spokesmodels - do these plans really work?

We all know Kirstie Alley and Valerie Bertinelli used Jenny Craig and lost weight successfull and kept it off, but I just saw a TV commercial for Jenny with Queen Latifah and it turns out she is stepping up as Jenny's spokemodel: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,330909,00.html

I have look up to all three of these of these women for their different accomplishments, and applaud them for working to get healthy (versus 'skinny'). And as much as I don't want to follow the crowd, the support of Jenny Craig from these three women holds a lot of 'weight' for me!

I need to loose some weight, about 50 lbs (my doctor recently told me I should not weigh over 200lbs when I told her about some knee pain I have been having) and since I don't cook (or like to cook, that is). Beside dance, I have a pretty sedentary life since I am a computer programmer (in front of a computer at LEAST 8 hours a day) and I have trouble with snacking and portions since my blood sugar goes crazy so I over eat and then feel bad (physically) so I know not only do I need to up my exercise, but I need to get control over my eating and since I don't cook, I end up eating whatever the hubby makes and since he is a large man, he tends to give me portions that are too big (so I need to relearn portion control).

I have been looking at trying either the NutriSystem or Jenny plan but wonder just how hard it is and if they really work. I already have trouble maintaining my blood sugar (I am not diabetic) and wonder if I will be hungry if I try one of these plans (prepackaged food plan that is)

Anyone here try either of these plans? Any feedback??

The perfect hipster/boy short...

Okay, so I'm a pear with a HUGE difference between my waist and hips (anywhere from 17-20 inches dependent on weight fluctuations). I have a really big problem with my waistbands and hip wraps migrating towards my waist when I dance. My solution has been to pin or snap (the mega snaps are awesome for this) boy shorts or hipster panties to my waistbands and my hip wraps as well.

My problem is that on panties/shorts big enough to fit my hips comfortably, the legs are too wide, and drawers themselves begin to ride up on the hips (WEDGIE! OW!). If I buy them smaller, they either don't come up even front and back (I have quite an apron) or I end up with the muffin top from hell.

So, here's the deal. I'm looking for the perfect hipster or boy short. It should be generous through the hip but snug (though not chaffing) around the leg openings. It should come up even front and back. And it should come in VERY large sizes (unlike most dance shorts which might go up to 2x if you're lucky). Ideally, it would be a lycra or microfiber boy short that ISN'T a cheeky panty (I want the cheeks FULLY covered) and hits right at the widest part of the hip (about 2 inches below the belly button on me).

So, am I out of my gourd or does such a short exist?

Is it envy?

I love my family, I really do...and for the most part they support my dancing. My little sister hurt my feelings this week though. She called me to ask what I wanted for Christmas. I told her about a bellydance shop near her home and described a ring. (those huge tribal rings) She was in a rush to head back north on Christmas and so I got over to Mom's to open gifts. She gave me the ring and then proceded to tell me that all the women in her office was making fun of it. She just rolled her eyes at me....she comes to the few evenst that my troupe dances at and then I can hear her on the tapes my husband does for us that "fat women shouldn't dance" (mind you, she is larger than I am) I'm telling you, I don't know what to think. I love my sister, but damn, she's so freaking rude at times. Is she envious that I am happy, that I feel good about myself, that I have dance sisters who love me and encourage me? I know I'm not the most amazing dancer, not even close, but I'm learning and I'm trying........I'm just tired

Hi Beautiful Trim and Fit Ladies: Just wanted to let you know that an elite magazine that is put out free monthly in our town is doing an article about fitness in March, and has interviewed me to do the belly dancing! I told the lady on the phone I was not fit, but overweight and have been through a long cancer journey. She came to my advanced class and stayed with me an hour afterwards talking to me and all. She took pictures and all, I did comment about my son in law making fun of me behind my back, calling me fat. This is a beautiful magazine that usually only the elite business people advertises in and is well known all around our town. We are part Arkansas and part Texas for we sit on the state line. Today, my daughter and 3 grandgirls are going to take a picture for the magazine too.

My advanced students were so excited, that a few of them took off work to get dressed and made up! This is a plus for our town to put belly dancing on the map again. After I left teaching the art in the 80's , no one has ever resumed teaching. So, I started teaching last year and had a lot of catchup work to do, since the dance has changed so much in 25 years!

What goes around in full circle comes around. It is too weird. Cynthia , (Babooka) http://www,joyofbellydancing.com/s12darc0906.htm

This autobiography was too long, and I apologize, but it is my life's story

To my bbbd sisters

My latest post on the melodia thread has me thinking. I am just curious as to how low do my fellow bbbd sisters wear their pants and skirts etc.

Do you wear them?

1. Under belly
2.Just below belly button
3.In between lower belly and upper belly leaving upper belly exposed with no cover up.
4. In between lower belly and upper belly leaving upper belly unexposed.

Also do you make it a point to expose your belly button?

I am in the #3 category. I haven't gotten to the point where I can completely let my whole gut out because that is where most of my weight is but since losing 50lbs I have lowered my pants,.skirts, panels etc a little more.

Son In Law Calls Me Fat Behind My Back

I bought my little granddaughter Madison a Nintendo DS to help her with her learning process so that she can get a little bit smarter. Madison told me her step dad said that playing it will make her fat, and I said his son 17 years old stays on the computer and plays his xbox, so then? Then Madison told me that my son in law Mike said he was glad 'MY FAT SELF" was gone from his house, and then Madison told me how he calls me fat all the time behind my back. This man is 47 years old, is the fitness director of a gym at St Michaels hospital for 20 years, has 2 Masters degree in business etc.. and I found out that he makes fun of people behind their backs, me included. Here he is a devoted Catholic, which his wife left him over 6 years ago, she was fat until she became anorexic etc...He drinks all the time etc;, is like 5'8" , balding, he shaves his head because he's turning grey, and he is into triatholons. I had given him an asthma inhaler for he was too macho to go to a doctor for it, and of course, he took my inhaler and never gave it back. He has had hip joint problems, from falling on skis etc.. and it about kills him when he is sick or unable to work out.

I text him on his phone and said I know that he has been calling me "Fat" and what goes around comes around, and that his Catholic ugly self, it will hit him some day.

I am a uterine cancer survivor Stage IV and made it to 8 years, with 3 other recurrences. Death was knocking at my door 8 years ago, and I was supposed to die shortly after a hysterectomy. I decided to start teaching belly dancing again, after quitting since 1980 at the college. No one in our town has ever taught belly dancing again, and I decided since I was retired - I wanted to keep the art going, going. I've had great turn outs, and presently am teaching a beginners' class at the college again and have been teaching an intermediate for 7 months at a dance studio.

I've lost 35 lbs on a weight loss program 2 1/2 years ago, but my husband got sick with throat cancer Sept of 2006 and we had to go to radiation twice a day, chemo once a week, doctors' appts, surgeries, etc.. that my tummy was hungry constantly. My stomach knawed at me all the time, so I guess I finally gained my weight back.

Also, I developed lymphedma in my left leg in March and that makes me weigh even more.

I just wanted to air this out and hear what anyone has to say about the issue. My daughter, of course, was stunned that I knew he has been calling me fat, etc. behind my back. He is a very controlling person and doesn't like for her to talk to me or her friends.

A Different Idea for Tummy Covers

I've read in so many tribes the question on tummy covers. Yes, there is the powernet covers and Sugar Petals has wonderful tummy covers.

I ran across this website and I purchased a few things to see if they will work. I thought I would share this with you ladies.

http://www.biggalslingerie.com Yes, it's a lingerie and "club" wear site for larger women, but look at some of the stuff they have and use your imagination on how it can work for you. What is great is you can order the designs in various types of fabric. I bought a red/silver honey comb net dress and will probably cut the bottom and wear the top with a bra and red dance pants.

They also have gauntlets and some nice arm covers.

And with Valentine's Day coming....you just might want to get something else interesting!

I'll post pics when I finish.

MAC Cosmetics is having a contest called "Are you an original?" I have entered the contest. We had to provide a photo that I think makes me look like an original and post a 200 character (not word) response to why I am an original.

Now, here's where you come in... there is voting!! Yay!! Please vote for me... here's where you can see me and vote for me... www.maccosmetics.com/origina...try.tmpl

There are a ton of "originals" on the site already, so I need all the votes I can get!!
Thanks so much for your continued support!

Plus size???

Why is it that when I purchase something that is "plus size" and even when they give measurements its only for hip, waist or bust. (yes this is a stupid rant coming from someone who runs a biz sewing for custom sizes huh??? )
How about the fact that my BUTT IS BIGGER THAN MY FRONT???? I bought some "curvy" plus size yoga pants. (yes for yoga) my butt crack hangs out, while the front can be pulled to my boobs. I dont even know why I buy stuff any more. If I had time to sew for myself, I would live in bellydance stuff. heh... or even just stuff thats fun and fits my body.
I havent figured out how to make Jeans yet, but who needs em???
wont buy skirts... why??? because they are always WAY shorter in the back, so I have to pull the front up to just under my boobs to make it even. Do people not get it? Dont advertise plus size, and then just make the "average" size bigger. The entiere pattern needs to be altered to fit measurements. Just because I'm fatter dosnt mean I'm taller. Dont expect that 45 inch hips is plus size. Remember that the skirts need to be shorter in the front than in the back, so that they dont leave an unflatering line...
ARGHHH!!!!!
ok, I feel better... somewhat... now I need to go sew for a lady who needs 35 inch front of skirt and 45 inch back of skirt... why??? she has a BUTT! (like most human beings)
*yes this is in response to soooo many clothing maufactures out there*

It happens to friends on the other end of the spectrum too. for some reason, we are all supposed to be cookie cutter shapes.

Dear Ample sisters you are the only ones i can discuss this with. I have a large belly that hangs a bit. However, since beginning to belly dance a year and a half ago, it seems to me that i am getting more of a waist. There is more of an indentation in that area. Now i know that you can't do exercises to spot reduce any part of the body but could it be that the various chest and hip isolations have caused more definitions in my waist area? Also I seem to be noticing slight indentations in the skin where the rib cage meets in the middle.. the zyphoid process area. I know i haven't lost weight and probably haven't lost inches..... What do you think? Could i be exercising muscles resulting in a waist type indentation? Have any of you noticed such effects? If I discuss this with others, all they will see is that my belly still proceeds me into the room. Thanks

So You Think You're Too Fat.....

I wrote this little essay a few months ago and I would like to share it with this wonderful group! Hope you don't mind.....and thank you for reading it. I hope it can help those who may need a little encouragement and give insight to those who don't go through what we BBBD seem to.

So You Think You’re Too Fat To Belly Dance?

By Sanura

During the late 70’s and early 80’s an ancient form of dance from the Middle East – Raks Sharqi, Oriental Dance, Belly Dance – became more popular in America. As people from Arab countries began moving to the United States and different ethnic restaurants began opening, belly dancing became a form of entertainment at Middle Eastern restaurants and various venues.

The belly dancers during this time were svelte and voluptuous with curvy hips, thin waist and ample bosoms. That is what restaurant owners and event promoters wanted since in America this was the fantasy image. As exercise took a turn during this same time period to include aerobic dance, belly dancing too became a new form of exercise. As a result belly dance classes were being offered at fitness centers, dance studios and by private instructors.

Some women signed up for classes as a fantasy for their husbands, and for others it was a different form of exercise and then for others a total emersion into a new culture. Over the past 20 years the art of Oriental Dance – has evolved into a myriad of different styles to include your traditional Egyptian Cabaret, Folkloric, American Cabaret, Tribal, and various forms of fusion dance.

During this evolution also came the revolution of “Fat is Okay”. What do I mean by this you ask? During the past 20 years, but more so during the past 10, designers and retailers learned that there was an important customer base out there who needed updating on clothing styles, thus the fashionable plus size women’s clothing industry exploded. No more loose fitting sacks or maternity looking tops for us Ruebenesque women. Clothing designers began designing for the plus size women and specialty shops opened such as Lane Bryant catering to the fashion conscious, extra large size women. The Big Beautiful Woman Magazine was published with articles supporting plus size women. From this revolution the plus size women became more confident in her personal life, and career.

But…….many of us still felt we couldn’t or shouldn’t do certain things, like wear a two piece bathing suit, or even for some a bathing suit at all! We shouldn’t show our midriffs or wear tight fitting clothes. Again, we would limit ourselves to what kind of stylish clothing to wear and also what type of activities we would pursue. No way was I going to wear a Lycra wetsuit to go scuba diving!

Then…...I got to thinking – sometimes a dangerous thing – why am I preventing myself from doing the things I like? As a child I danced from the time I was 5 years old through high school. I took ballet, tap and modern jazz. And then in college I entered disco contests, learned to line dance during the Urban Cowboy scene and bobbing up and down to the Punk Rock sounds during the late 70’s and early 80’s. Okay….now you can guess my age! I wanted to dance again! Since I had a child and put on some weight tutus were out and tap dancing was a little difficult since 40 DDs didn’t feel too good whacking me in the chin. Then someone told me about a belly dance class being taught nearby. I thought this would be fun and would help me get back into shape and not be as boring as treading on the treadmill.

I went to my first class and low and behold, most of the women were young and skinny! I was still young, but definitely not skinny. So I stood in the back of the class and followed the instructor. I enjoyed the class but still felt a little inferior to the other students only because I felt fat and wondered if they wondered what a fat person was doing taking belly dancing! Although I enjoyed the class, I didn’t feel like I fit in, so I quit. No one wants to continue going somewhere they didn’t feel welcome. It’s bad enough that my family was getting on to me about my weight.

Let’s fast forward several years into the 90’s. I got rid of the husband that criticized my being fat and found my best friend from college who loved me no matter what and we married. While turning 40 I thought I needed to do something for me that was fun and began taking belly dancing again. I must say that part of the courage came from turning 40 and from the love and support I received from my hubby. I didn’t care if I wasn’t thin or young at this point! I wasn’t standing in the back of the class anymore either! I decided I liked who I am and what I look like. I liked how my shimmies looked in the mirror too! And the undulations and figure eights look great with extra curves! Once I decided to let go of what society considered beautiful and accepted myself, there was no stopping me. Of course this did freak my mother out a little. Being the tiny Asian woman that she is – obviously I took after my American father’s side of the family - she just didn’t understand why I was accepting my larger size. I love my mother dearly, and bless her heart I know she always meant well, but size related to beauty for her. Thus I was beautiful when I was thin according to mom.

I am 49 now and have been seriously belly dancing for the past three years. I love what I do and how I look. I have met some fabulous Big Beautiful Belly dancers and have made some wonderful friends. Many of us BBBDs have made inroads in changing the publics perception of what is an attractive belly dancer. She doesn’t have to have a 36-24-36 figure. A beautiful belly dancer has confidence in herself and skill of the dance. Costumes can be created to flatter any figure. Wear what you feel comfortable in wearing whether you wish to cover your belly or not cover your belly. There are no rules. Whether you’re a Cabaret style belly dancer or a Tribal style belly dancer you are a belly dancer that happens to be big and beautiful.

Yes, there are still those studios where plus size dancers may not be as welcomed. I believe that if we show confidence in ourselves, take the dance seriously and learn the technique, we can hopefully overcome the prejudices. Those who wish to still believe that only thin people should belly dance are self centered and the bad karma they give will eventually come back to them. If you feel that the studio you are attending is not supportive then I highly recommend that you find somewhere else. If there aren’t many choices then start something yourself. Get a group of women who want to learn and get together and learn from DVD’s. There are many great instructional DVD’s to learn from. Attend area workshops to help enhance your learning.

The ancient form of the dance was done by women for women and they were REAL women just as we are. So grab your hip scarf and dance! And don’t let anyone, most of all yourself, say you are too fat to belly dance!

Hoping for some help. The troupe I dance with is looking to buy cabaret style bra/belt combos this year. As we are all shapes and sizes we are given free reign on style - just have to be same color and primarily cabaret. Here's my problem - I am quite busty and can't seem to find anything to even close to fitting (44 DDD). Need the size but also something secure - don't want to be taking out the front row of the audience w/ an ill-timed wardrobe malfunction :-) Your help would be greatly appreciated!

Help with an article?

For those of you who remember a previous thread on here about a certain "letter to an editor", I got to thinking after someone else said something that it might be a good idea that someone write something from our point of veiw. So I'm writing an article on why we dance. We being those who are NOT a size eight or smaller and who may no longer be in their 20's.

I would really like to hear your stories as to why you partake of this wonderful art form. I'm writing this article about you and from your point of veiw and I could really use your help.

If you would like to help out with this please send your thoughts to my personal email at melodyrythem@yahoo.com or to my tribe address. I would appriciate it if you sent a picture too, but you don't have to if you don't want to. I will not be using any "bashing points" on skinny and/or younger dancers... so please don't send anything like that. And if you don't want your name used I can respect that too.

I've already gotten a piece from Blume with a beautiful picture... thank you Darlin' you are truly one of our treasures in this art form... as well as a personal interview with Halima (who has been doing this for over 30 years now) and a few of my own troupe sisters. But I would like to hear more.

Anyone else want to contribute?

Bellyrolls on bigger bellies?

Okay... after reading some a recently active tribe thread, I have to ask... I've thought about asking before, but, you know, I didn't want to offend.

Anywho - here's what I wanna know:

Do you think belly rolls are easier for those of us with bigger bellies?

I see all these girls saying, "I can't isolate my abs. How do you find your lower abs? How do you drill belly rolls?" etc.... and I just don't get it. Belly rolls are the one thing I have ALWAYS been able to do. Like from my first six weeks of class. And believe me when I say I'm not talking down to anyone, cos I'm definitely not a dancing virtuoso. I can't even do a paddle turn without losing my balance.

So, I started thinking... maybe these ab isolations are easier for me because I carry weight there? Or maybe because I spent the first 20 years of my life trying to suck in my tummy? Maybe I'm used to isolating my upper abs because I need them to carry around my 44G boobs?

And of course, the only place I could really think to ask without sounding a bit like a freak was here =) So whaddaya think? lol

I'm really having a tough time doing flutters. I just can't feel it! I've had different teachers tell me to do it different ways and still nothing. Maybe it's different for us larger women. Does anyone have suggestions?

I have finally decided I need a DVD to help guide my practice sessions. I don't have much $$ this time of year (like sooo many of us) and I'd like to get one good DVD with warm ups and drills on it. Can you lovely ladies recommend a good DVD? I appreciate your help!

Shimmy help?

I have this problem. I practice 3/4 shimmies (the kind produced by knee bending, not glute-squeezing), and slow goes fine. Fast is another story, and layering anything with a shimmy just produces what looks like spasms or convulsions. I realized today that I'm thrown by my outrageous "reverb", so that, if I just let it all fly, it's difficult to start the shimmy pattern on the other side. If I try to stop the reverb at all, that's when the spasm-y badness begins.

Has anyone ever had this problem at the beginning of their shimmy development? How did you deal with it? Or, even if you haven't had to worry about this, do you have any suggestions?

Any ideas are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Plus-sized belly dancers needed for upcoming shows in Philly and NYC

Big Moves (www.bigmoves.org) is a Boston-based dance company that is the only producing, training, and service organization in the world dedicated to getting more people of all sizes into the dance studio and up on stage. Our spring show, the "Big Top," is touring in NYC and Philadelphia. We are looking for one plus-sized belly dancer of intermediate (or beyond) training and experience to perform with us in each tour stop. The Philadelphia shows (matinee and evening) take place on April 26, and the NYC shows take place on May 2 and 3. This is a paid gig.

If you are interested in performing with us, please contact me, Amy Smith, at info@bellydancenewengland.com. I am one of the founders of the Caravan of Curves, the belly dance contingent of Big Moves. We can discuss show specifics offline.

Gilded serpent letters to editor

ok so i like to read peoples opinions on the gilded serpent. I read them often. I found one opinion so be so mean. i know its her opinion. I have to say... " it isnt gonna change! ha ha ha... We should be able to wear what we like. I feel confident and beautiful when i perform in my 2 piece bedlah and tummy cover. I like the way I look. Too bad for you that you have such a shitty attitude."

http://www.gildedserpent.com/let2ed.htm heres the cut and pasted to here

11-13-07 re: Where Have All the Cover-ups Gone? Ashiya & Naajidah
Bravo Ashiya and Naajidah!
I couldn't agree more. When I was in theater, we were never supposed to show ourselves to the audience in our costumes and makeup, and I held the same views when it came to dance performance.

However, while we're at it, let's to a little further and talk about proper costuming, period. Why oh WHY do I keep seeing women who are obviously and sometimes, painfully overweight still wearing the 2-pc bedlah outfit?? And wearing a power net bodysuit does NOT make up for this. There's only so much that spandex can do! We should do nothing that distracts from our dance, be it odd costuming, badly fitting costumes, or not dressing ourselves to our best effect. I would never let any student of mine out in public in an outfit which did not flatter her and show her
